Here's a workaround to this problem: don't drag the favicon to the Journler dock icon--instead, select the URL in your Firefox navigation window, and drag THAT to the Journler dock icon

Feature:
So yeah, I would like to see a syntax highligher within the editor itself. Sometimes it is faster for me to copy and paste a quick snippet of code and then I can write notes about it instead of trying to describe what I am talking about. Something along the lines of http://qbnz.com/highlighter/

Workflow:
Paste code into editor, use the mouse to highlight the code, then right mouse click and select "Syntax Highlight" and that be a menu of the supported languages.

Thanks JustG,
When I try and repeat what Phil described (from an older version) I don't get a screen in the presets or Journler that gives me the option any longer to control margin space. Unless i am blind (which is a possibility). In page set up choosing journler only allows me to add header, footer and other doc info which it chooses itself. Nothing about shrinking the margin. The other competitive product does allow me to adjust so I know it can be done. Maybe a solution is for Journler to allow a default header in preferences with my logo in it but it would still have to have control of the distance from the edge of the page to get me to where I want to go which is .5 from the edge of the paper.

I am not sure if this is a bug or not, it could be the way Journler works. I was dragging and dropping an e-mail from Mail's list of e-mail into the Resources panel. When I drag and drop this way, I get the MBox number such as 3499 as the subject of the e-mail. However, if I drop the e-mail into the message window, the subject of the e-mail is put in the message and the subject displays in the resource window.

I have nearly converted 3500 documents over from MacJournal but I cringe when I print out my handouts because what used to be on one page in MacJournal now ends up on two pages in Journler. I LOVE Journler because it files efficiently and allows me to find my research and handouts really fast. But your margin defaults are 1.5" (possibly more) from the top and I cannot adjust it. I need my logo at the top of every page so I have a consistent look in my docs but the logo and margin at the top force the page to go to two pages. In an older version I think there used to be a margin adjustment but I cannot find it any longer. (unless I was dreaming) In any regard this is a big deal to me and I am wondering if it is for anyone else that uses this in a similar way. I hope you'll consider this for the next major release. Also, I would like to highlight words and link to an outside file. I have yet to figure that one out either. I see where I can link to another Journler file but not an external file to launch. Thanks for considering.

By the way,
after investigating Applescript and learning how much I DON'T know about programming, I decided I'm willing to pay like $10 for a script that will do that automatically. I am assuming that it would be a simple script for someone to do if they know applescript. But forgive me if that is peanuts for a large job (I just don't know).

Also, in my humble opinion, that would be a kick*** addition to future versions of journler.

Thanks a ton. Journler's great.

I don't really use apple mail either, I just assumed (perhaps erroneously) that that would be the easiest way to hook into Journler since it uses apple scripts so extensively. Maybe programmers out there would know a more direct route to getting from the server directly (in my case gmail). But I'm not a programmer, as much as I would like to be, so I'm not sure I could implement Applescript in Mail without hours of stumbling in the dark, or anything else for that matter.

Yes, the only way to import the items is to export them individually from Yojimbo first. Journler doesn't know anything about the way Yojimbo stores its data, so you must convert it to a standard format. Whether or not Journler is able to import the tags assigned in Yojimbo depends on how Yojimbo tags the data it exports. Collections are much less likely to be re-established automatically. All of that information is stored in a proprietary format that Journler can't interpret.

The best I can do for information ahead of time is mention something in the Importing help file.

Subject: Send email TO Journler
Topic Replies: 3

Maybe this is already possible. Seems like an obvious need, but I can't find info in the forum (I'm new to forums, so maybe it's just me).

In my attempts to apply GTD to my life, I wanted to implement the following system:

SEND AN EMAIL TO A SPECIFIC EMAIL ADDRESS AND JOURNLER GETS IT AND FILES IT INTO SMART FOLDERS ACCORDING TO THE KEYWORDS I PLACE IN THE MESSAGE TITLE.

For example
1. I create an email account called journler@mydomain.com
2. Apple Mail automatically accesses journler@mydomain.com using POP or IMAP
3. Automator or quicksilver or scripts (I'm new to all that and can't figure it out too quickly) automatically transfers those files into the journler drop box.
4. Journler imports the message and converts <message title> to <entry title> and <message body> to <entry body>.
5. Journler then works its magic and applies the smart folders based on the message title (which it already does very well).

For example, the journler smart folders would be:
>To-do
>to-contact
>to-buy
>>home depot
>>groceries
>>online
>Blog Posts
>Ideas
>Deep Thoughts
>Etc.

Oh, that would be so amazing. Not only could I tell myself what to do from anywhere, my wife could do the same! (Not to mention anyone else who knows that email address and has an internet connection)

I didn't think of that (which was a bit silly of me). I would suggest adding this to the Help or FAQ: I read both, trying to find a way to import my Yojimbo data.

In my case, it wasn't a disaster, since I really needed to weed out my Yojimbo stuff anyway, but it would be very helpful to have this info up where new users will see it.

Thanks for explaining. I've linked to the original files in this case, since I know they will change, and need to be in that position (source-control working copies etc.). So it's good news that they will update.

I will be opening these docs in the appropriate app. when I have major changes to make, but when it's a quick change, or wanting to check the header, it will help a lot if I can open these PO text files directly in Journler.

You're right about source-control, though. I tend to use PathFinder's embedded SVN functions for quick changes; and both BBEdit and my translation editor LocFactoryEditor will commit changes for me. I wish people wouldn't switch to git and bzr: I'm quite happy with SVN.

Hi, Anthony;

This has now got beyond me. At this point you should write to Phil at Journler dot com with a link to this thread and ask him -- be patient; he doesn't answer immediately.

At this point, the best bet is to export from Yojimbo or SOHO Notes as rich text files and import those into Journler -- that's how I migrated from SOHO to Journler.
That depends on how you've added the resource to the entry. If you're linking to the original file, then all that's in Journler is the reference, so when the original file is updated, that's the update you see when you select the resource in Journler. On the other hand, if you import the resource, then what you've got in Journler is a copy of the original, so changing the original won't affect what you see in Journler.

What I do is import my media and click to open it in its associated application from within Journler when I want to edit it (for example, an OmniOutliner document). This may not be practical for managing the working copy of documents checked out of a Subversion repo, though.

Hi again

I am really delighted with Journler: this evening I've been using it to give me an overview of one of my projects. I can attach all my project files to this one "page", organized in a table so I know where everything fits. This is the first time I've been able to create an overview like this: it's a great help.

I was also pleased to find that clicking on one of these included documents will open it in the same pane. I'm curious to find out if Journler will automatically update when the source file is updated (e.g. via SVN).

But I do notice that while Journler is happy to open files identified as text files, it won't open my PO files. Gettext PO files (filename.po) are the standard translation format for FLOSS. They are simply text files with a header and list of strings. From the POV of the software opening them, unless it is going to parse the translation-specific elements, they are just text files.

So Journler should be able to open them, but it doesn't think it can, since the extension is different, and the default application for most of them is LocFactoryEditor (an excellent XLIFF translation editor which also supports PO and Appleglot).

Would you please tell Journler that PO files are text files? I hope this is not a demanding task.

Thankyou for all your work on this excellent application.

I'm going to go back and play some more, uh, setup the application.

Unfortunately this does not help.

Here is my entry www.box.net/shared/4z41q00g80

Should only be a webarchive but it also has an MVC image listed as a resource. Right-clicking and deleting this resource has no effect.

The entry is number 219 and these are the resources found within its folder in ~/Journler/Journler Entries/ www.box.net/shared/5bb3ucgkck.

This image is actually a resource from entry 319
www.box.net/shared/m8wdubl5w4

So I seem to be getting nowhere. Is it a problem with the references? Here's my Journler folder
www.box.net/shared/vtu9e6dwcw

Thanks for your help

Hi everyone

I'm a completely new Journler user (MacZOT introduced it to me yesterday), so I hope you will excuse my ignorance. I did search for posts about Yojimbo, but didn't find anything about this.

I tried importing my Yojimbo data, but Journler simply imported the sqlite database as a link. Lucky for me, I only had about 400 items in Yojimbo (my doc data is still scattered across several programs), so I was able to copy and paste each one in separately, taking the opportunity to weed out expired items.

However, people with large Yojimbo collections are going to want to be able to import their data as separate resources, just as it is displayed in Yojimbo.

I would also suggest importing the Yojimbo collection and tags with each item.

I hope this is viable. I recently updated both my password and URL collections (Web Confidential -> 1Password, URL Manager Pro -> WebNote, thanks again to MacZOT), and a key element in choosing each replacement program was the ability to import my existing data. I have large collections in both cases.

So I think people will be more likely to choose Journler if they can import their existing collections from the main players (Yojimbo, SOHO Notes etc.).

Thankyou for this intriguing program, which I hope will help me keep track of all my information and my many different projects (especially information affecting more than one project).
