It does appear to be heading that way. My Journler version 2.5.5 was installed on my machine almost exactly one year ago (7/18/0. Can you imagine the agony involved in trying to work on a complex piece of software that you had written more than a year before? It would take weeks just to get up to speed even if the code was really well commented.

the title of a separate window or floating window until the window is closed.

It should update immediately (as it does in the entry list).

Kudos on the product.

Thanks a lot, Sesquipedalian! I think the problem comes from having a French keyboard in my rotation. If I switch quickly, I might switch to the French keyboard instead of the English one and I think that's what causes me problems. I think that the missing characters might be French accents of some kind rather than Korean characters (because Times New Roman does have Korean characters). I'm not sure what the problem character is, but I'll try different fonts and see whether that works.

I opened Font Book and disabled the offending font. I guess I'll disable all of the ugly ones until there are none left to switch to. I'm sure I'll eventually find some that I can live with. Thanks again for the advice!

This is actually controlled at the operating system level. You'll find that this will happen in many apps.

The basic issue is that the font you are using for your English text doesn't contain any Korean characters. So Mac OS X automatically switches to a font that does have some, and uses that. It does it's best to choose a font that looks similar to the one you were using before. It decides this based on some descriptions embedded in the font files. Apparently, the closest match to your font is AppleMyungjo according to these descriptions. Note that not all fonts have these descriptions included, and if they don't, then they will never be matched with anything.

If you want to avoid AppleMyungjo, the easiest thing to do would be to type your English text in another font that matches more closely with a different Korean font. Or even better, type everything in a font that contains both Latin and Korean characters. On my computer I have a font called #GungSeo that includes both, and it looks similar to Times New Roman. If it's Korean looks okay to you, tell Journler to use that as your default font for all entries.

I think it might be a more general problem and not associated with acrobat. I have also links to storage on the network my entries, do you think those might be responsible? I can impossible track all of them down since in the past months I have several entries each day, each asssociated with many links, and containing word, excel, pdf files etc. Is there a program that tells me what the computer was looking for exactly to be able to see what is actually happening? I am surprised that this is not a problem encountered by other people, though.

Regards

In Journler's preferences under the Media tab, do you have Journler set to copy resources into your journal, or to leave them where they are?

Since it seems that this involves connecting to the internet, try running Little Snitch while you start Journler. It will report any and all outgoing connections it tries to make, and what it is trying to connect to. With that information, hopefully you can narrow down where the problem is. Little Snitch is payware, but the trial should be enough for this purpose.

I got Devonthink personal free from MacHeist for sending a twitter to their website, ver 1.6.

So how was the switch to Devonthink? Did you export entries from Journler? Sadly it seems that Journler is going nowhere and many others will be thinking about moving on -- share your experiences about the transition, it might help others make a move less painful

Some initial experiments assure me that it is possible to make a new tab and to specify the folders and/or entries it displays. I'll have a look at that. It's also possible to get a tab to tell a script what folders/entries are showing in it so you could remember that and recreate it. A script could also run a filter against your tags and display entries with them.
You're right, my idea was a kind of Bookmark system, which is comparable to what we have in Safari. But you also can leave those tabs open, but that's more a work around.

I can imagine, that the whole idea (opening a tab with specific characteristics) is possible with scripts, but I'm not cable to write those.

Interesting idea. A number of folks, for example, have asked for the ability to maintain two different journals; one for work, one for home; which Journler can't do (unless you use rooSwitch). Smart tabs would make that possible, although you'd need to be able to open a tab by name (which Journler can't do now).
Sure, I use Tabs a lot and find them useful. A Smart Tab is similar as a Smart Folder, you can assign characteristics to it. In combination with Smart Folder you receive a fairly flexible system.

For me it would help e.g. to assign "contexts" to them.

You have every right to get what you were led to believe you were paying for, that is, a new, improved, version.

The reality is that, even in the corporate world, that doesn't always happen. And you have made your investment, not in a corporation with a team of programmers, project managers, marketers, and a shipping department, but in a "one-man shop," which vary quite a bit in their interests, abilities, and commitment. You paid a license fee in the hopes of receiving a future product and seventeen months is certainly long enough to dash those hopes and bring on some bitterness.

I don't want to minimize the disappointment, and even betrayal, that you are feeling.

The timeline is: first I bought release 2.5, then I paid to get the 2.6 upgrade. I am still waiting, as I said 17 months.

The product is great and I use it almost daily, but that has nothing to do with the fact that I have paid for something that is not delivered. The advice then is really, as always, dont pay for something that do not exist.

I use Journler to take notes while studying Korean. I switch languages between English and Korean every 15 seconds or so, as I type something in Korean and then the translation in English. I use a keyboard shortcut to switch between input methods. (I also have a French keyboard in the rotation.)

The problem I have is that the font keeps changing as I switch languages. It is incredibly annoying, as the font it switches to - AppleMyungjo Regular - is a horrible one with weird spacing between characters that makes it very difficult to know whether or not there is an extra space in there. That font is just plain ugly.

My feature request is a lock on the fonts used to avoid involuntarily switching fonts every 30 seconds. (Is the font switching a bug? I have no clue.) I like Times New Roman 18.0 pt and would be happy using only that one. Anyway, it's certainly not a must-have feature for most users, but it might be useful to others learning languages too.

Thanks again for your hard work! Journler is a great product!

I am urging others to pay for a product that they find useful. That's what I've done, and if I get a new improved version some day at no additional cost, that will be great, too. Presumably, you've been a somewhat happy user for the last 17 months and have gotten some value for the money you paid.

I, too, am a little surprised at the author's distraction from his product, but I put it down to his apparent youth and the fact that the ratio between users and paying customers apparently has been quite dismal. Personally, I would love to have the idea for, and the ability to execute, a Mac application that people would find useful. Making at least part of my living selling software for the Mac would be very rewarding to me, I think.

Well, I also like the product. In fact I liked it so much that I invested in the 2.6 version Jan 28, 2008, ie approx 17 months ago.
I am not sure that it is wise to advise other people to invest. The author is not present at this forum to answer questions, other than license (collecting money), bugs and features seems to be ignored.
I belive it is now time for the author to step forward and present his plans, tell us when the, promised 2.6 version, will be available etc.
When this plan exist and is acceptable, it is time to advise others to invest.

Just received my Journler license. Took about two weeks, but so what? The delay did not affect my use of this great software. I wish everyone who uses the software would support its creator by buying a license. I'm a professional computer programmer and so I know and appreciate the effort that goes into the writing, testing, support, and distribution of a fine product like Journler. It's a great product now and worth paying for as it is. And I know that we all have high hopes for its future.

- accept emails - I'm not always at my Mac when I have an insight or a thought. So I'll tend to capture this in Gmail or via a verbal note on my iPhone.

I'd love to just forward these messages to Journler, and have Journler integrate them and be my central source. Journler can't currently do this - Chandler can.

- let me add a journal entry or note via iPhone.

If you use Mail.app or other AppleScript-able mail clients, you can do this today. All you need to do is create a rule that matches your chosen criteria, which then runs an AppleScript to add those matched messages to Journler.

For example, I whipped up the following in about 10 minutes:

Code:

using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages selectedMessages
      repeat with theMessage in selectedMessages
set theSubject to the subject of theMessage
set theBody to the content of theMessage
         tell application "Journler"
set theEntry to make new entry
set the name of theEntry to theSubject
set the rich text of theEntry to theBody

set the category of theEntry to "From Mail"
set the tags of theEntry to "sentFromMail"
         end tell
      end repeat
tell application journler to save changes
end perform mail action with messages
end using terms from

I then created a rule in Mail.app which runs this script for any messages with a Subject of "-- " (that's two dashes and a space). (This works particularly well on iPhone, because it's four taps: symbols dash dash space, and you're ready to type an actual subject.)

You can change the category ("From Mail") or the tags ("sentFromMail") to anything that makes sense for you.

Note: This code has been tested well enough to prove to me that it works. Use at your own risk, etc.

Can you workaround this by linking to your music files? Here's what I did:

In iTunes, secondary (right) click on the song you want to put into Journler.

Choose Show in Finder.

Drag the song from the Finder into your Journler entry.
